"Silence" is a song by Canadian group Delerium featuring vocals by Sarah McLachlan. The song appeared on their 1997 album Karma. On May 3, 1999, the original song was first released in the US and Canada as the album's third single. On June 14 of that year, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand followed. The single became best known through various trance remixes, with DJ Tiësto's version, released on October 30, 2000, being the best known and most successful.
"Silence" has been a hit in various versions over the years. The remix by Fade was the first version to make it into the charts: in the Netherlands it became Dancesmash on Radio 538 and reached number 32 in the Top 40 and number 33 in the Mega Top 100. This was followed by the CD single with the versions by Airscape and DJ Tiësto, which was the biggest success. It became a number 1 hit in Ireland and reached number 3 in the United Kingdom. In Canada, the group's home country, it reached number 5 in the charts. In the Netherlands it reached number 7 in both the Top 40 and the Mega Top 100, while in Flanders it reached number 5 in the Ultratop 50. In 2004 a new CD single with remixes under the title "Silence 2004" reached number 1 in the American dance charts. In 2009, this remix by Niels van Gogh vs. Thomas Gold reached number 31 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 48 in the Single Top 100.
